- Rosenthal System Workout (tm)
-
- One of the
-
- Rosenthal Utilities (tm)
-
-
- By repeatedly exercising thousands of low level tests, System Workout
- confirms the reliable performance of new or upgraded systems and/or when
- changes are made like installing new hardware or software.
-
- Especially difficult problems like intermittent, marginal performance
- errors and conflicts are revealed. As System Workout logs more time and
- tests, confidence in reliability increases. Diagnostics conducted
- continuously over an extended time are recorded as a text report file.
-
- Beginners can easily use this program to generate a report with the
- sophisticated information valuable to more advanced trouble shooters.
- Always offer the report RSW.LOG by FAX or e-mail when requesting help from
- technical support professionals to analyze problems.
-
- Getting Started
-
-
- Copy the files from the distribution disk to a directory on the systems
- hard drive.
-
- Windows and multitasking operating systems insulate direct hardware
- control and the advanced diagnostics this program performs.
-
- Because this program performs direct hardware control, it's best to exit
- Windows and run directly under DOS for the most accurate results. Enter
- RSW at the DOS prompt to begin operation. Follow the prompts as directed.
-
-
- Memory Exercise Tests
-
-
- Conventional base memory occupies the first 640k and requires no
- additional memory managers or drivers to test. Memory above that is
- exercised through whatever actual drivers and memory managers are
- currently being employed. A preliminary memory test is conducted first
- because defective memory could cause subsequent hardware tests to fail. By
- testing the memory before proceeding, other problems caused by memory
- failures are less likely to be incorrectly diagnosed.
-
-
- Keyboard Tests
-
-
- Standard and enhanced keyboards are supported. Some special keyboards
- differ in the layout from the one displayed. Press each key and verify
- that an appropriate response is indicated. Although the automatic test
- routines will exercise the keyboard processor, indicator lamps etc. There
- is no substitute for actually physically pressing and releasing keys.
-
- The Num-Lock, Caps-Lock and Scroll-Lock indicator lamps of the keyboard
- should match those appearing on the screen display.
-
- Pressing the <ESC> key twice in sequence will proceed to the automatic
- testing.
-
- Mouse / Track Ball Tests
-
-
- Pointing devices like the mouse or track ball require physical
- manipulation. RSW can exercise the electronics and drivers, but there is
- no substitute for pressing the buttons and moving the pointer. Verify that
- each button and movement gives an appropriate response. Tests are
- conducted using the drivers installed for the pointing device. Device
- driver version and settings are reported as they are installed.
-
-
- Automatic Burn In Tests
-
-
- The repetitive automatic burn in exercises will continue indefinitely if
- not interrupted. Press <ESC> to terminate the program and generate the
- report file RSW.LOG. Restarting the program at a later date will resume
- logging test hours again from those the times last recorded.
-
- To manually over ride the automatic tests, press a keyboard key or move
- the mouse or track ball.
-
- Hard disk tests are conducted in two modes for safety. Drive space
- occupied by existing files is tested in READ-ONLY mode. All the files on
- the disk are verified to read, but no write tests are conducted on
- existing files. Uncommitted drive space is tested more thoroughly by first
- writing test data and then verifying its recovery.
-
-
- Floppy drive tests exercise the motors and head transport mechanism.
- Remove any floppy disks form the drive.
-
- Tests are conducted on CD-Rom drives when a CD disk is detected in the
- drive. A CD can be left in the drive to include CD-Drive exercises.
-
- The automatic burn in exercises will continue indefinitely with the time
- logged indicated at the top of the screen. To terminate the program and
- generate the RSW.LOG report, press the <ESC> key.
